Lesson to share with students

I want to introduce one of the prevalent values or spirits in Korea: Hyo.

It means filial devotion to one's parents, the elderly and others. Filial devotion is deeply rooted in our Korean society and has been established (engrained or embedded would be better words) in Koreans’ mentality for more than half a century, from the Josun Dynasty era. The essence of Hyo is to show your gratitude and respect to others. The very starting point is your parent, as with them one usually forms the most intimidate relationship one can have from one’s birth, then, that admiration can overflow to others and expand to the whole society. People in Korea, consider Hyo a natural duty of every person and its origin came from Hyo-jae of Confucianism.

In May, we honour the devotion and sacrifice of parents and teachers.
On 8th May, it is Parents' Day.  Children often buy one carnation, write a thank you letter, and sing songs for their parents. On 15th May, it is Teachers' Day. The showing of gratitude and respect to parents gets bigger and overflows to others, like teachers and the elderly. That is the beauty of the Hyo. It connects each individuals to the whole society with gratitude and affections, thereby tightening the bond between them.
