A. About the book
<달리기를 말할 때 내가 하고 싶은 이야기>에서 하루키는 달리기를 통해 데뷔 30년을 맞은 작가의 문학관과 인생관, 내적 성찰들을 진솔한 어휘와 놀라운 통찰력으로 풀어내었다. 해마다 강력한 노벨상 후보로 거론되는 하루키는 마라토너로서도 유명하다. 하루키는 19784월 도쿄 메이지 진구 구장에서 야구 경기를 관람하다가 한 타자가 정확히 볼을 때리는 순간 그렇지, 소설을 써보자라고 결심했다. 그의 나이 스물아홉이었고, 그 계시의 순간으로부터 1년이 채 지나지 않아 그는 소설 <바람의 노래를 들어라>를 써서 군조 신인상을 받으며 문단에 등단, 작가의 길로 들어섰다. 전업 작가로서의 인생을 시작한 하루키. 그는 장편 소설 <양을 쫓는 모험>을 탈고한 뒤 얼마 후인 1982년 가을, 본격적으로 달리기를 시작했다. ‘소설 쓰기는 육체노동이다라고 생각하는 하루키는 체력과 집중력, 지구력을 키우기 위해 달리기를 선택했다. 하루키는 이 책에서 달리지 않았더라면 자신이 쓴 소설의 성향이 많이 달랐을지도 모른다고 고백한다. 마라톤을 중심으로 그의 문학과 삶을 솔직하게 털어놓는 이 최초의 회고록에서 문학도는 문학에 대한 소신을 배울 수 있을 것이고, 러너라면 60이란 초로의 나이에 1년에 한 번은 마라톤 풀코스를 뛰는 하루키의 열정을 배울 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 큰 뜻을 품고 있는 젊은이들은 인생의 목표를 달성하기 위해 어떤 마음가짐과 실천의 지표가 필요한지를 깨달을 수 있을 것이다.

Tips on Becoming a Running Novelist

I think physical nuisance that I have to work out hard everyday and watch what I eat to stay trim should be viewed in a positive way, as a blessing. We should consider ourselves lucky that the red light is so clearly visible. Of course, it’s not always easy to see things this way.
 
I think (A)this viewpoint applies as well to the job of the novelist. Writers who are blessed with inborn talent can freely write novels no matter what they do - or don’t do. Like water from a natural spring, the sentences just well up, and with little or no effort these writers can complete a work. Occasionally you’ll find someone like that but, unfortunately, (B)that category wouldn’t include me. I haven’t spotted any springs nearby. I have to pound the rock with a chisel and dig out a deep hole before I can locate the source of creativity.
 
To write a novel I have to drive myself hard physically and use a lot of time and effort. Every time I begin a new novel, I have to dredge out another new, deep hole. But as I’ve sustained (C)this kind of life over many years, I’ve become quite efficient, both technically and physically, at opening a hole in the hard rock and locating a new water vein. So as soon as I notice one water source drying up, I can move on right away to another. If people who rely on a natural spring of talent suddenly find they’ve exhausted their only source, they’re in trouble.
 
In other words, let’s face it: Life is basically unfair. But even in a situation that’s unfair, I think it’s possible to seek out a kind of fairness. Of course, (D)that might take time and effort. And maybe it won’t seem to be worth all that. It’s up to each individual to decide whether or not it is.

Find Metaphors

[Definition] What is Metaphor?
A metaphor is a figure of speech that is used to make a comparison between two things that aren't alike but do have something in common. a metaphor's comparison is more indirect, usually made by stating something is something else. A metaphor is very expressive; it is not meant to be taken literally. You may have to work a little to find the meaning in a metaphor.
For example, a river and tears aren't very alike. One is a body of water in nature, while the other can be produced by our eyes. They do have one thing in common, though: both are a type of water that flows. A metaphor uses this similarity to help the writer make a point: Her tears were a river flowing down her cheeks. As a river is so much larger than a few tears, the metaphor is a creative way of saying that the person is crying a lot. There are so many tears that they remind the writer of a river.
